Performing A Self-Massage In-Between Physiotherapy Sessions

Massage therapy is sometimes used as a part of a physiotherapy treatment program. Massages can improve the quality of life for the patient by smoothing out tight bands and pressure points in the muscles. If you do not have the time to see a massage therapist, or if you would like to supplement the session with your own massages, purchase massage oil and perform a massage on yourself.

The Benefits of Massage Oils

Massage oils heat up your body to help make the massage more effective. Also, the massage oils reduce friction, which allows for you to perform a more vigorous massage without the risk of the massage being painful.

Obtaining Massage Oils

When purchasing massage oils, you can either choose massage oils that already contain the essential oils in them or you can purchase a carrier oil and add essential oils to the carrier. This gives you the option to control how strong the essential oils are in your carrier oil. Carrier oils can include almond oil and wheat germ.

One of the advantages of being able to add different essential oils is that you can add oils that will treat specific problems. For instance, if you have a problem with itchy skin, you can add primrose oil or passion seed. Lavender essential oils are calming and are ideal for those who are suffering from stress.

Selecting the Area to Massage

Before you apply the massage oil, think about the parts of your body that most need a massage. If you are suffering from a headache, massage your neck and shoulders. If you are experiencing digestive discomfort, massage your abdomen. If your hands hurt because you perform a lot of typing, massage your hands.

Performing the Massage

To apply the massage oil, simply add some to the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to heat up the oil. Rub the massage oil into the part of your body that hurts while making circular motions. Be gentle around sensitive parts of your body, such as near your ears. For your abdomen, place pressure on the part of the abdomen that hurts and then release the pressure. For smaller areas of your body, use your fingertips. For larger areas of your body, use your hands to perform long stroking motions.

Any massages you receive should be performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist (such as one from Synergy Health Physiotherapy). While massages are usually not a substitute for treatment, these treatments can help you heal more quickly and can also aid in relaxation.
